So, I keep getting text messages from Verizon telling me that my cell phones data plan is almost reached. Odd. Im always on WiFi and never use my data inconsistantly. What could be eating my plan up?

Facebook!

James O’Toole of CNN Money wrote a very interesting article showing us not only how the iOS and Android Facebook apps are killing data plans but also how to stop them from doing so.

First flagged by consumer finance site MoneySavingExpert.com, they showed how the auto play setting in the newly updated apps are auto playing videos, therefore eating the data right up!

The fix is an easy one thankfully. If you are an iPhone user:

  • Go to your Settings app
  • Scroll down and click “Facebook”
  • Click “Settings”
  • Click “Autoplay”
  • Choose “WiFi only” or “Off”

Android users:

  • Go to the Facebook app
  • Go to Account Settings
  • Click “App Settings”
  • choose “Auto-play only on Wi-Fi” or “Off”

Easy! Simple! Videos won’t also won’t play automatically provided you scroll past them.. Your data plan will then hug you graciously!

All this had me thinking. I almost got charged for going over my data plan for watching hundreds of “Ice Bucket” videos I could have cared less about! SHEESH!!!
