At XC Media Design, we take pride in protecting businesses from various digital threats. Not only are we one of Rhode Island and Connecticut’s most trusted Website Design and Digital Marketing studios, we are also specialized in Cybersecurity and Computer Forensics.

Recently, we have noticed a surge in fake Google robocalls targeting local business owners, including those with 860 and 401 area codes. These calls are fraudulent attempts to deceive you into sharing personal information or engaging with scammers.

The Deceptive Script

Here’s a typical script from these fraudulent calls:

“Hello, this is Google Verify calling about your Google business listing. Your Google business listing needs attention. If your listing is not showing up properly, customers will not be able to contact you or find your location. If you are the business owner, press one. To verify or update your Google Business listing, press nine. To opt out or dial 844-368-6645.”

Listen to the audio of the message below.

Pressing nine or any other option doesn’t help; it simply ends the call. The entire process is designed to trick you into thinking your Google Business listing is at risk, pushing you to act hastily.

The Scam Uncovered

When confronted with our credentials as web design, digital marketing specialists, and cybersecurity and computer forensic professionals, the scammer quickly hung up. This behavior clearly indicates their malicious intent.

Why These Calls Are Dangerous

  • Impersonation: Scammers pretend to be Google representatives, exploiting the trust and authority associated with the Google brand.
  • Local Numbers: Using local area codes like 860 and 401 adds credibility, making recipients more likely to answer the call.
  • Urgency: The script creates a sense of urgency, compelling business owners to act without verifying the legitimacy of the call.

Protect Yourself and Your Business

  • Know the Facts: Google does not use robocalls to contact businesses about their listings. Any call claiming to be from Google demanding immediate action is a scam.
  • Verify Independently: If you receive such a call, do not press any numbers. Instead, hang up and verify your Google Business listing by logging into your Google My Business account directly.
  • Educate Your Team: Inform your staff about these scams so they can recognize and avoid them.
  • Report Scams: Report any suspicious calls to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Google to help protect other businesses.
